Sarah-Jane Boyd

Unlike many aspiring professional golfers, Sarah-Jane Boyd was a relative late-comer to the game she now plays for a living. Having not picked up a club until she was 13 years old, SJ seemed destined to follow in her older brothers’ footsteps and head to university to become a doctor. However, having achieved grades of A*/A /A in her science A-Levels at Truro School in Cornwall, she soon decided that her golf clubs were more to her liking than a stethoscope!

A natural athlete, SJ represented Cornwall at both tennis and netball at school and always loved the enjoyment and pressure that sport produced. Ever-competitive, in her formative years, SJ always insisted on playing from the men’s tees with a fierce determination to keep up with her three older siblings, all of whom are accomplished golfers, has paid dividends.

Having only started entering national competitions following her A-Levels, SJ soon reached a handicap of plus 4 and was fast-tracked into the England Ladies Performance Squad in 2012.

2012 marked Sarah-Jane’s breakthrough season. Having obtained a late entry to play in the British Open Ladies’ Strokeplay Championship at Shandon Park in Belfast in August 2012, she started inauspiciously, carding a three-over par outward nine of 39. However, her putter caught fire on the inward half, storming back in 30, finishing with six straight birdies for a 69 and the clubhouse lead.

From there, she promptly sealed a wire-to-wire victory, fending off Curtis Cup player, and 2014 Ladies European Tour Rookie of the Year, Amy Boulden, by two shots to take the title and with it entry into the 2013 Ricoh Women’s British Open at St Andrews’ iconic Old Course. That experience proved an unforgettable one, having played practice rounds with seven-time major winner Inbee Park, then the world’s top-ranked player and American sensation, Lexi Thompson, on the hallowed turf of the Home of Golf.

Whilst this Belfast win may have been a surprise to many people around her, it was no more than the young Cornish golfer expected of herself. Having won four Cornwall County Ladies Championship titles and the South West Ladies crown by the age of 20, SJ had proven she embraced the pressure that came with stepping into the winners‘ enclosure.

To prove that her 2012 national crown was no fluke, SJ took the English Women’s Amateur Championship at King’s Norton Golf Club in 2013, seeing off the challenge of fellow England internationals Gabriella Cowley and Alex Peters to seal a two-shot triumph.

Having represented England in over 40 matches, SJ signed off from amateur golf in style, going undefeated when claiming 4.5 points from a possible 5 to help lead England to victory in the 2014 Ladies Home Internationals at Aberdovey Golf Club in Wales. In 2017, she had her first professional win at the Mertion Sydney Invitational winning by 9 shots.

While one of her primary ambitions still is to win a LET event, and ultimately, to be successful on the LPGA Tour in America, she realises there are many more avenues to be explored in the promotion of women’s golf. To this end SJ has taken her Instagram followers from 300 to approaching 50,000. SJ is an ambassador for Adidas and Dassler board member and is attached to Silvermere Golf Complex in Cobham, Surrey and she is looking forward to exciting and successful partnerships with the brands.

Having lived by the mantra of wanting to be the best she can be at anything she tried, SJ looks forward to the opportunity to enhance the status of women’s golf and is set on a career she can be proud of.
